As with many organizations in Iraq, the Iraqi Red Crescent has been hit by the 'brain drain' affecting many of the country's professionals across all sectors. Many Iraqi Red Crescent-trained employees and volunteers are lost every year and need to be replaced. This situation reflects the urgent need to increase investment in intensified capacity building to replace the lost human resources and to recruit, train, and retain additional volunteers.
The Iraqi Red Crescent provides training for its employees and volunteers in order to build their effectiveness, and to engage and inspire them to participate in all Red Crescent activities. Trained volunteers are encouraged to get involved with their local branch and to train other volunteers, thus replicating the effort.
All training programs aim to provide trainees with knowledge and skills necessary to meet the needs of the people affected by the humanitarian crisis in Iraq. The training courses focus on disaster management, quality (SPHERE standards), project planning and reporting, explosive remnants of war awareness, international cooperation, logistics, and others. More than 400 employees and volunteers were trained in 2006 and 180 were trained during the first 6 months of 2007.
