By September 2007, nearly 2 million people had become internally displaced since the US-led invasion of Iraq, more than 50% of which are children. Some families have been forced out of their homes as a result of the sectarian realignment that has affected many areas, and many have had their living space destroyed as a result of the armed conflict.
Families fleeing the violence take immediate shelter wherever they can find it, sometimes in areas of uncertain safety, too often with limited access to clean water. Most Iraqi Red Crescent branches are involved in Emergency Shelter activities that range from assessing the Internally Displaced People situation to setting up and managing camps.
The Iraqi Red Crescent needs to replace the tents for most Internally Displaced People families and to set-up new camps for additional number of Internally Displaced People. Barring any major natural disaster, the Iraqi Red Crescent projects it requires approximately 20,000 new tents to serve immediate needs. At $400 USD per tent, the total price tag would be $8,000,000 USD.
